Dream Big – Tottenham University Project @Haringey Sixth Form College
This week Haringey Sixth Form College hosted for another year the launch of the Tottenham University Project organised by Dalwarwin Babu at St Francis De Sales Primary School. This project was created to inspire Yr 5 & Yr 6 children to “Dream Big”, to encourage and nurture their ambitions and aspirations.
The project was set up 4 years ago and has given children experiences outside of the school curriculum, such as hearing talks from authors such as Michael Rosen and Dapo Adeloa, visiting Lords Cricket Grounds, going to Oxford University for example – these events inspire the children to think about their future and be ambitious.
Six schools in Tottenham; Brook House Primary, Lea Valley Primary, Lancastrian Primary, Risley Avenue Primary, Devonshire Hill Primary and St Francis De Sales took a selection of 20 their Yr5 and Yr 6 students where Haringey Sixth Form College ‘s Russ Lawrance warmly welcomed them and said, “You can be whatever you want to be – you just have to aim high and work hard!”.
Dr James Lane, Head of St Francis De Sales told them about TU project and that they are the nurses, chefs or politicians' of the future and how important it is to “have big dreams” and the importance of writing them down. All the children were then presented with their own TU Journal so that they could write down their dreams and record all the experiences that they will have as part of the TU project this year.
The children heard from the students that were a part of the Tottenham University project last year where they described some of the trips they went on, what they learnt and how its benefitted them. Javell said, “it’s made me realise that, even if I think something is hard, I should keep on trying and never give up.”
The event ended with a few words from Ann Graham, Director of Children’s Services for Haringey, who told the children that they were “AMAZING” and she was “so proud of them for thinking about what they want to be when they grow up”.
Russ Lawrance said “It has been a pleasure to host and sponsor the launch and the graduations for this amazing Tottenham University Project over these past few years. To ignite the ambition of our little ones, for them have high aspirations and see them grow, it is an amazing privilege to be a part of something like this within our local community.”
