Forensic and Criminal Investigation

The forensic and criminology sector is diverse and wide-ranging, with a wide range of occupations for graduate entry including forensic laboratories, the police force and the probation service.
The Level 3 Diploma in Forensic and Criminal Investigation is a qualification for post-16 students wanting to continue their education through applied learning, and who aim to progress to higher education. The qualification is equivalent in size to 3 A levels, and it has been designed as a full two-year programme.
Everyone taking this qualification will study seven mandatory units, covering the following content areas:
- Principles and applications of science
- Practical scientific procedures and techniques
- Science investigation skills
- Forensic investigation procedures in practice
- Applications of criminology
- Criminal investigation procedures in practice
- Applications of criminal and forensic psychology.

How Will I be Assessed?
A combination of internal assessments, which are set and marked by teachers, and external assessments which are set and marked by the examining body. Mandatory units have a combination of internal and external assessments, all optional units are internally assessed.
Entry Requirements
BTEC Level 3 | Either - Four GCSE grades 9-4, including a minimum grade 5 in Maths and Science. Or - Level 2 Diploma at Merit or Distinction and a minimum GCSE grade 5 in Maths and Science |
Progression
Progression to employment following further study at university onto different Forensic Science or Criminology degrees. However, it also supports students progressing directly to employment, as the transferable knowledge, understanding and skills will give successful students an advantage when applying for a range of entry level industry training programmes and/or Higher Apprenticeships in areas such as laboratory technician or forensic technician.
Our Tutors
This course is delivered by course staff who have over 20 years in academic education; qualified biochemists and staff with vocational experience, biologists, geneticists and those with forensic science backgrounds. The technical staff include award winning, experienced and passionate staff well versed in all aspects of appropriate health/safety, safeguarding and key technical skills in standardisation, provision and laboratory management. The teaching staff have experience with working with theoretical physics models and contemporary scientific research.
