Featured News / 5 July

Last night 3 out of our 6 #TeamHaringey6 students attended the Jack Petchey Achievement Award Celebration event where they were recognised as #OutstandingAchievers - It goes without saying, they thoroughly deserved these awards and we are very #H6Proud of them all.

Checkout highlights from the event.

Here is what their tutors had to say about them each and why they won the award:

Astrid – Level 3 Criminology, Law and Psychology

For her contribution to the Student Leadership Academy as an amazing student ambassador, the way she speaks to prospective students, parents and visitors with such grace and I can see that she has gained more confidence since starting as an ambassador as in the beginning she was quite shy as he was new to the role and to the college but she has become a lot more confidence and has never shied away from new challenges such as going to external events/careers fair as well as other external enrichment events such as going to other colleges for market research and recently taking part in being a part of a podcast for Unity Xtra radio. We are very #H6Proud of her.

Pasha – Level 3 Criminology, Law and Psychology

For her contribution to the Student Leadership Academy as an amazing student ambassador, through taking on this role I can see that from being a very shy speaker she is now full of confidence and takes the lead when taking prospective students on tours and speaking to them about specific courses they are interested in. She is always prompt and ready for new challenges that come here way whether it’s speaking to parents about a subject she does know about she tends to take full ownership of it and asks myself or teachers questions just to give the right answer; and for that we are very #H6Proud of her.

Keona - Level 3 BTEC National Ext Dip Business

I would like to nominate Keona for the Jack Petchey award. My reasons for this is that Keona came to the college September 2021 as a quiet and withdrawn individual who had so many inner genii’s crowding her mental state. Keona remained quite introverted throughout her course, settling to be by herself for long periods of time. When Keona progressed on to her L3 Business programme, she displayed a sense of challenge for herself to overcome the worries that had troubled her so deeply. She found within her studies a unit that enabled her to unlock her personality and creativity. This unit was ‘Managing an Event’. Through this subject area Keona blossomed with her ideas and embarked on a project to spread positivity amongst many individuals. She embarked on an idea that considered the feelings and experiences of others entering into new environments. Keona’s created a H6 wall art which enables all students and staff at Haringey Sixth Form College to write and communicate positive statements on to a canvas that empowers newly enrolled students to feel encouraged to succeed at college. This wall art has had a positive impact on students and staff as there maintains to be continuous contributions of positivity to this very day. I am so proud to be part of Keona’s personal breakthrough to become a self-assured and happy individual who is smiling daily and continuously planning for all things positive for her future. University is going to be great for Keona.

Olivija Urbonaite - Level 3 BTEC National Ext Dip Sport

Olivija has been an outstanding student since starting Haringey 6 in 2022. Throughout, her two years here every piece of coursework she has handed in was graded distinction and is set to be our high achiever of the year in sports, with a prediction of a finishing grade of D*D*D. It has been a privilege to watch Olivija grow as an individual over the past 2 years as when she started she was a shy and introverted individual, in comparison to now where she is confident and is happy to share her opinions and take charge of tasks. Olivija is someone that her peers can rely upon and is an essential part of the team.

Renee Jones - Level 3 Year 1 Sport student

Renee started late with us this year from another college but found her feet in sports quickly and settled in well. Renee has demonstrated what it is to be an outstanding pupil with her attendance, punctuality and pride in her class work. Renee has been predicted a distinction grade for her first year exams and helped her peers along the way to achieve. Renee has been a mentor to some of her peers in lessons and helped them when they didn't understand some of the challenges when completing anatomy and physiology. Renee is a leader and has a positive influence on everybody that she interacts with and her late enrolment has been a blessing in disguise to the sports department.

Emeka Dawkins - Level 2 BTEC Ext Certificate in Public Services

Emeka has shown resilience during her last term at Haringey and she continues in the New Year. Emeka works hard and strives to a challenge. Emeka was worried about sitting her Level 2 Public Services Exams in January but she has prevailed through her self-doubt and worry with sheer drive and determination. She is a team leader and an excellent role model to her peers as she is always willing to give guidance and support to those who need it. Emeka participates in extracurricular activities, one being rugby which she has excelled in and this has given her the discipline and focus. Emeka supported the Level 3 Year 2 learners with their WEX delivering coaching sessions to a group of primary school pupils, she was creative, approachable and fun to her peer and to the pupils. Emeka tries her best everyday even on a bad day she is willing to express her feeling and listen to make sure she stays on the right path. Emeka has immense potential and we are glad she is part of #TeamHaringey6.
