Kick starting a Sports Business
The Level 3 Year 2 group visited Paragon Gym in Shoreditch for a Sports Business workshop and an introductory kickboxing session. The owner of the gym, Stuart Lawson, who is also a former world pound for pound kickboxing champion, talked to the students about his journey from an elite athlete to becoming a successful sports businessman.
Stuart was able to talk openly about the benefits and challenges to establishing your own brand and forging a successful business in the sports industry. Much of what Stuart commented on are issues that the students have been studying within one of the units on their course.
The students then participated in an hour long kickboxing session where they had the opportunity to learn the basic techniques of the sport in a fun and professional environment. Students rose to the challenge, and managed to grasp a good understanding of the fundamental techniques in a short period of time. Stuart said ‘It was a pleasure to train the boys, and they’re welcome at the gym to complete a beginners course on the house.’
Andrew Antwi, one of the sports students who attended the trip, said ‘the trip was fantastic, and all of the instructors were really talented, especially Stuart. We all want to go back and learn more about the art of kickboxing.’
Russ Lawrance, Principal Haringey Sixth Form College commented “What a fantastic experience for our students visit Paragon Gym. This allowed the students to gain information that isn't necessarily learnt in the classroom. I know that the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and will only go on to benefit them in their course and in the future.”
