Russell Group students meet former Student at Warwick University

In late January, a group of 25 Russell Group Forum students travelled to the University of Warwick. Russell Group Forum Coordinator Tom Carding explains why: “First of all, I think it is very important for our students to think about the opportunities for university life that exist outside of London – in this case, in a beautiful, leafy campus university. Secondly, and even more importantly, two of our high achieving students from last year are now studying at Warwick.”

One of those students, Cansoy Elmaz, achieved three A grades last year and accepted an offer to study History at Warwick. He told students about the benefits of life on campus and the range of clubs and societies on offer at university – as well as his previously unknown talent for fencing.

Cansoy says: “I'm proud to have been a student of Haringey Sixth Form College. Just as the teachers cared about where I ended up, I also want the students to do well. I hope the students learned that nothing is out of reach, you just need the confidence to take it.”

Student Ozge Erdur, who hopes to follow in Cansoy’s footsteps with a degree at a Russell Group university, says she learned a lot from the experience: “It was easy to relate to him. It was great to hear that someone who, like me, was retaking AS levels had got into such a good place. It gave me hope that I will do the same.”

Haringey Sixth Form College Principal, Russ Lawrance added "at Haringey Sixth Form College we believe that having access to leading universities is important for our young people because they deserve every opportunity to succeed in life.  We want to make the most of our young talent, these trips and all the activity the College does through our Russell Group and Oxbridge Forum is very much about opening doors - understanding and overcoming the barriers to the best university access. The Russell Group represents 24 leading UK universities which are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivaled links with business and the public sector."
