Health & Social Care at Grace Day Care Centre

This was our 2nd Christmas concert that the students delivered at the Grace Day Care Centre, it was a great success with the students singing to over 60 service users and VIP’s. They sang traditional songs with one of the students Alisha singing solo.

As well as singing the students helped to give out the dinners, sat with service users comforting them especially those that were sad at the thought of spending Christmas without their husbands or wives.

One of the students Chantal spent the entire afternoon feeding a service user who had intestinal and respiratory problems, she showed great care and dignity towards him as well as being patient to his needs. All the students supported the staff in the centre by helping to tidy up without being asked. Studying on the health and social care course enabled the learners to link theory to practice as well as be part of real life experiences.

The manager and Pastor praised the work of the young people” stating that they make a world of difference to the lives of elderly people who sometimes have no contact with any one or younger people.

We will be starting our bi monthly meetings on Thursday afternoons from February 2018. This is where the students spend the afternoon helping out, planning activities and building up one to one relationships with the service users.

Russ Lawrance College Principal commented “It was an fantastic opportunity for the staff and students to be a part of the Grace Day Care Centres' Christmas event. I know that though their own work, not only have they have raised their own levels of understanding of whats involved in caring for the elderly but have also been able to reach people who were worried about dementia and encouraged them to confront their concerns. I am excited to see how the staff and students develop their relationship with the Centre in the future”.

Well done to all the students they made the health and social care department and the college proud.
