Haringey Sixth Form College were invited to take part in a very exciting project being run by Alexandra Palace’s event team who offered us a very exciting opportunity for our young people, to work with a professional carnival artist to create parade props inspired by family and friends no longer with us at the Alexandra Palace Day of the Dead Parade and annual Fireworks Display.

The young people at Haringey Sixth Form College were involved in the project and was part of the Parade on 4th and 5th of November wearing the amazing masks that they created over the past few weeks.

The Learning Officer at Alexandra Palace, Isobel Aptaker said “This is the first time the Park and Palace Charitable Trust have worked with the Haringey Sixth Form College and we have been very impressed by the enthusiasm of staff and students. The pieces created with Carnival Art are fantastic and fit perfectly with the rest of the Day of the Dead Parade. We look forward to working more closely with the college as the Palace move towards the opening of the East Wing in 2018.”

Laura Wallage, Art Teacher at Haringey Sixth Form College said “As an art department, our number one priority is our students and nurturing their creative skills and talents in order for them to be successful. As teachers we consider ourselves as dual professionals because we all practicing artists and designers. We all encourage students to find their specialism of art & design and embrace individuality. The students involved with the Alexandra Palace work have made us all so proud and have been true professionals.”

Russ Lawrance, Principal of Haringey Sixth Form College, added “This was a fantastic experience for our students. To showcase their talents at such a high profile event that is set against unrivalled panoramic views of London. I am delighted that their contribution helped make the 2016 Day of the Dead Parade and Fireworks Display an unforgettable experience. I am grateful to the organisers for having the confidence in our outstanding Art Department and I am sure people will see, the results speak for themselves.
